Thanksgiving or Black Friday? Choose one!
The build-up to Thanksgiving can be one of the busiest times of year for some businesses. On the other hand, other businesses see Black Friday as a time they can bring in the crowds. The fact that these are back-to-back can often cause difficulties for business owners as we ask a lot of our staff, all at a time when they would rather be with their families or preparing for their own special occasions.
That’s why we at Colorado Canopies suggest that you begin planning well in advance and considering the idea of doing one or the other. While the idea of closing the store for a day might seem counterproductive in terms of increasing sales, you may find that you actually benefit better through real focus and rewarding/ incentivizing staff to focus on one or the other.
An unusual idea for sure, but hear us out.
With all the planning and preparation surrounding Thanksgiving, both personally and for business, Black Friday can be left as an afterthought which causes problems. If you choose to open on Black Friday, you need to be prepared. Of course, you can always choose to remain closed as a simple way to reward staff if you usually have a busy build-up to Thanksgiving. It depends on your type of business.
Different Focuses for Different Businesses
For some, Thanksgiving will be a time when you get more customers…
…in particular, food-based businesses – while for others, Black Friday will be a better option for your focus – e.g., heavy goods, clothing, electronics, are all things people want and will actively seek out when there is likely to be a special offer. In the former case, I would suggest you close on Black Friday and ensure your staff knows this well in advance so they can give their all in the time before Thanksgiving. In the latter case, I would suggest you consider closing your store the day before Thanksgiving in order to give your staff a chance to get everything ready for Black Friday and if possible, even give a couple of hours off after everything has been set up.
In either case, you will be seen as the business who look after and appreciate their staff and this can help with staff loyalty and their morale and work ethic during the periods you are open – the occasions when you really need them to be at their best.
But Won’t That Effect Sales?
If you choose wisely and act in advance, closing on one day will not only not be negative but could be positive. The morale boost for the staff of having the day off after Thanksgiving will be hugely positive, both in the run-up to the big day and in the days following it. If your business is not really a “Black Friday Winner”, is not a type of business that will attract lots of people, then it is likely that the majority of customers will actually not bother with you on that day – considering all the other options available to them.
On the other hand, if you are a business that can take advantage of Black Friday, the day before Thanksgiving, the day of preparation and an early finish for staff, can actually ensure that your Black Friday is well-focused and successful by allowing you have more staff on duty on that oh-so-busy day.
Set Your Focus and Be Prepared
Whichever option you go for, you need to ensure you make the most of it. This means having displays ready, proper signage, well-organized spaces and ensuring people can get around and pay quickly and easily.
