Marketing to Children
We at Colorado Canopies have often had clients ask us about how they can showcase their products, events, and occasions which are aimed at children. It is sometimes seen as a difficult thing to do as you seek the balance between informing and attracting their attention while not being overtly “salesy” or a hard-sell. However, there are many ways that you can promote your products and services that will keep both the kids and their parents happy.
Quick Do’s and Don’ts
Do! | Don’t! |
Have a clear message
Have bright and colorful materials Use images Show what you are offering Show enthusiasm Double check text and images for double meanings or confusing messages |
Overcomplicate things
Target kids in a way that would lead to problems. i.e. Kids overly harassing parents Hard-sell. Parents will just steer clear of you Only target the kids – parents will still be the decision makers!

Marketing is Child’s Play
One of the big mistakes that people make all too often is to have marketing which targets children as if they are little adults. This doesn’t work for the majority of kids. Your message needs to be specifically aimed towards them and not in adult language. Remember the age of the target group for your product. If they are young (under 7) there is a good chance that they will either not read yet or only be learning. In this case, you need to be sure to keep text to a minimum and focus more on images.
At age 7-12, most kids will have a good enough level of reading to take notice of text but it is still not their main source of information gathering – just like most adults – and they will still look at images first. However, if your marketing image interests them, they will take the time to read the text you have there too.
To get that instant attention, it can help to show kids using the product or engaged in the service. Remember that even if every 8-year-old would love your product when they have it, if they don’t immediately see WHY they would love it, they may not give it any attention.
Children are Information Magnets
We have all been subjected to the inquisitive and knowledge demanding questions that kids can hit us with (usually at the worst times). This thirst for information, knowledge, and understanding means that if you take the time to inform, then they will take the time to understand and will look at things that might not specifically interest them at first, just so they can understand it.
For example, if you have an art set that is aimed at children and have a person demonstrating it or an in-store display with signs, even kids with no previous interest in art will check out what is going on. They may gain interest in it or not but had you just stacked the art sets on a shelf, the kids would not have even gone to that section of the store!
