Although businesses have long since stopped relying solely on printed paper for all their promotional activity, the method of using flyers, brochures, postcards, and business cards is still very much alive. The fact is that in many cases, for a potential client to receive something physical, something they can hold and not simply scroll past with the flick of a thumb, is almost a novelty and certainly something that they have to look at. Today we will look at the use of these kinds of products and talk about whether they can help your business.
The case for printed paper
First of all, we should begin by saying that when we refer to printed paper products, we assume that you will use products which are of a certain quality, that has been well designed and that communicate a clear message. We don’t recommend using low quality and rushed designs as these can give a really bad impression of your company and will likely end up in recycling.
However, with quality products, people will at least take a look at the item, be it a flyer, card or brochure, and this is the key first step in attracting a client. It is harder for a client to ignore paper products than an ad on their phone, so if what you offer is of any interest at all to the person, they will look at it properly.
Creating flyers and postcards
These items tend to be sent out en masse to people quite indiscriminately. Their low cost and small size make them ideal for reaching a wide range of people in a short space of time, either through a mailshot, being handed out or left in public places for people to pick up. The key focus of these should be a short sharp message which is easy to understand in a quick glance. A special offer, a new service, etc is what these items are most effective at, so keep it simple.
Creating brochures and folders
These tend to be more selectively distributed in most cases. This is because they have a size and level of information that is more than what a flyer or postcard would contain. Use these with existing clients to build the relationship, when approaching “warm leads”, reaching out to an interested potential client who needs more information, etc. The cover of a brochure or folder should, of course, be well branded and include company details, logo, slogan, etc. The majority of information, however, should be categorized and laid out inside in an attractive and structured way. No need for big “Special Offer” type messages to catch the attention, in most cases the reader is actually interested in the information and will read it, which is why having it well laid out is so important.
Of course, brochures can be used more indiscriminately but it is important to remember the cost involved in printing these and assess the return on your investment carefully.
