How to Make your Sign Effective
When it comes to creating signs, banners and pretty much any type of attention-grabbing promotional item, it can often be rushed and not thought through. While embarrassing errors are generally avoided, the actual effectiveness of many signs is compromised when some key criteria are not considered. In this post, we are going to discuss some of these criteria which are important aspects of any promotional item and which will help you make your sign effective.
Location – where is the sign going to be?
A hugely important factor that is very commonly forgotten about is the actual location of the finished sign. A sign which looks well on a computer screen may be completely ineffective when but in place if the location has not been considered as part of the design. Will it be up high making smaller print more difficult to read? Is it on a busy road where cars rarely go slow enough to digest a lot of information? The final location of the sign should be one of the first things defined with your designer to ensure it is effective.
What is your sign’s message?
Yes, it seems obvious to consider what the message will be but all too often people try to put in too much information or try to be funny or clever and this results in the message being lost. This is especially the case in locations where people do not have time to read a lot or carefully consider your message. A road sign saying “Stop” is effective because it is concise and clear and while we don’t need to be as direct as that in our signs, it is worth considering whether people will understand your sign within a couple of seconds. If not, why not?
Too much information can also confuse the reader so be sure to only include the necessary info which can be understood within the reader’s time for reading it. A sign in-store can obviously have lots more info than a road sign because people have the time and capacity to read it!
Who is your sign for?
The target audience for your sign has to be seriously considered from the beginning. This is the core purpose of your sign yet all too often people design things around what they like. What a 50-year-old man thinks will appeal to teenagers is often simply not the case, and vice versa. This is why it is vital to work with a designer who has the knowledge and experience of different markets, industries and audiences and who can point out flaws and push towards a more effective sign that attracts the intended target.
